05 Aug 2020: XOD Evening Sailing
Published 00:00 on 5 Aug 2020
Low tide sailing on Wednesday so X129 put it to the test before the race started, giving Chris Creek the opportunity to be useful and pull them off the mud. Problem was that it started a fashion! Everyone wanted to slide in the mud. Chris was so busy pulling numerous boats off the mud that he ran out of fuel! X51 would have won if she had a clean bottom, and didn't do an excellent grounding Jybe if that possible, and let half the fleet pass. Oh well all in a day's sailing -many thanks to Alastair and Chris for a fab evening race.
Friday afternoon Steve and Gill became Mrs and Mrs Dover, finally managing after 4 attempts to get married during these difficult times. On behalf of the fleet - Congratulations and hope you both continue to be very happy.
Saturday began Roger's bonanza 4 days of racing.
It started very well in about 10 knots of wind racing round to the other end of the harbour up beyond Northney marina to a little unknown buoy called Church. We watched as John Tremlett shot off with Sarah while the rest of us bunched up downwind, down tide until we hit (not literally) Ellanore and with half the fleet going one side of the harbour one and half the other to SW Pilsey. With the wind gradually decreasing until it finally was 2-3 knots, That required immense work on all our parts to get the boat to move anywhere. Suddenly just before 1pm we had a gust of 7 knots and everyone got very excited - we all managed to get to Church but by this time all the anchors were out and those not quick enough just never made it. We had at least found John and Sarah in Lass on the other side of the harbour, probably having lunch whilst we tried in vain to catch up with him. We all did, passed him and then he passed us all and made it to the finish line just before X55. A very long hot race - Roger you retired - It was your race!!
Many thanks to Peter Taylor and his team for being on hand all 4 days.
Racing this Saturday and Sunday so don't forget if you're looking for crews in order to get on the water please let me know there are several waiting in the wings
See you on the water in Merlin
