Rowing at Itchenor
Harbour rowing is great fun and a fantastic sport.
Rowing started at Itchenor in 2015 when we were lent a Solent Galley by the Pat Sherwin Trust. This beautiful clinker built, fixed seat, wooden coxed 4 has been at the centre of the growth of rowing at Itchenor ever since.
Our enthusiastic group with rowers of all ages and abilities includes many sailors and former rowers as well as complete novices to rowing. We now have over 200 active rowers with daily outings around Chichester Harbour.
Outings are fun and typically involve a row to Bosham, Dell Quay or East Head and often include a coffee stop. Evening rows in the summer can have spectacular sunsets. Seal sightings and birdlife are part of the pleasure in all seasons.
Itchenor Rowing also enters events such the Round Hayling Island Race and the Great River Race on the Thames in London.
We now have 2 fixed coxed fours: Iccanore and Bembridge which we use on our regular outings. When they go out together the outing can become very sociable and is a good way of meeting other club members. Rowing these boats is easy to learn and we have introduced many complete beginners to the sport.
Excitingly we take delivery of a Coxed Coastal Quad sculling boat in Spring 2020. This will introduce sliding seat rowing to Itchenor which will expand our horizons so that we can go further and faster. Hopefully this boat will appeal to former river rowers and our existing rowers who want to learn a new skill.
