Our Fleets: Sailing Overview

We are an inclusive club with fun and competitive sailing for all abilities, from complete novices to world champions, from the highly competitive to the totally relaxed, for the individual or the team. Whatever your skill level, whatever your level of interest or time commitment there's sure to be a class for you sailing here.

Sunbeams

Ranging from 95-year-old beauties to all new GRP yachts our Solent Sunbeams offer competitive racing on level terms. With their beautiful lines across the whole wind spectrum and no restrictions on tides we enjoy a long racing season at Itchenor.

Our sunbeam fleet welcomes all new sailors and those who would like to train.

  • Training: n/a.
  • Racing: most weekends and on Thursday evenings, with annual racing at Cowes Classic Week.

Swallows

With more than 30 Swallows in our fleet we host three or more races every weekend from April to October in addition to several Trophy weekends. These classic three-person one design keelboats were designed originally for the 1948 Olympics and are fast, simple and beautiful.

  • Training: n/a.
  • Racing: Every weekend, three or more races and Wednesday evening racing.

XOD

We have 40 beautiful classic wooden 20ft XOD keelboats in our fleet (not all in the water at the same time) and have three standards of racing so that everyone has the chance to practice and improve. We have over 40 different cups and prizes!

We have lots of crewing opportunities so please do get in touch if you're interested.

  • Racing: both days of the weekend and every Wednesday for fun.

Cruisers

Our enthusiastic Cruiser section organise several rallies throughout the year, heading across the Solent, across the Channel, down to the West Country and beyond.

We're keen to encourage younger members to join our Cruiser division so please do get in touch if you're interested. Cruising visitors from home and abroad are also welcome to join us for events onshore and offshore alike!

International 14s

At the cutting edge of small craft sailing, we're very proud of having the largest regularly racing International 14s fleet in the UK. The twin trapezes, asymmetric spinnakers and hydrofoils on rudders make these state-of-the-art boats super-fast and super fun to race and a joy to watch too!

  • Training: n/a.
  • Racing: Often takes place an hour or so before high tide on alternative weekends throughout the year.

RS200

Highly popular RS200s (double handed, hiking, racing dinghies, using an asymmetric spinnaker system) are perfect for mixed crews, young sailors and family teams. Their strict one design rule keeps racing close and competitive.

  • Training: n/a.
  • Racing: Occurs around midday on most Saturdays and Sundays throughout the season.

Merlin Rocket

The ultimate two person hiking dinghy The Merlin Rocket sits at the centre of the dinghy-racing scene. It combines the boat handling and tactical racing of the traditional designs with the thrills and excitement of the modern "fast in a straight line" designs. With a friendly, family-orientated national circuit no matter whether you are cruising or racing you are bound to enjoy your sailing.

  • Racing: Occurs on focus weekends throughout the sailing season

RS2000 (formerly Laser2000)

We have a number of RS2000 boats available to hire from the club from Wednesday to Sunday throughout the season on a full day or half day basis. We even provide full training so you can skipper your own boat! Further details can be found on our Boat Charter / Try Sailing page.

RS2000s are the perfect training boat for beginners and as a great transition through the classes to more advanced boats/rigs/systems.

  • Training: Available for private coaching throughout the sailing season.
  • Racing: One scheduled Open in May and invited to join the informal dinghy race.

RS800

Our RS800 class meets regularly for fun sailing which focuses more on the taking part than the winning. For "ultimate sailing with remarkable ease" and to experience the thrill of real high-performance sailing on these one-design two-man trapeze skiffs, get in touch.

  • Training: n/a.
  • Racing: Pretty much every other weekend throughout the season.

Singlehander

This class is for single sail, non-trapeze, non-foiling single-handers no slower than a Solo and no faster than a Hadron H2, Devoti D0 or an Aero 9. Being similar boats they enjoy racing boat-on-boat without a handicap adjustment.

  • Training:n/a.
  • Racing: scheduled most weekends and on Wednesday evenings during the summer.
